Hi Nancy,
If your son asks you such a question, you need to sit down with him and talk about that issue or else he will try to find answers from his friends that will lead him to wrong imagination what sex is all about.
First of all, we need to use language that is appropriate for his age and his ability to understand. In order for us to be able to understand where he is at, we need to ask him the way you asked him:
“Mommy was just wondering son, where you got that word from”. “What did your friends tell you what it is”? Do you know what it is?
If he does not understand a thing, then we need to go very slow and very basic, such as the difference between boys and girls the way you explained to him. Most of them will hide things they know thinking that the parents will get upset or just want to know what the parents have to say, so they can compare between what they know and what the parents say. I told my daughter, if there is discrepancy in the moral issues between what you hear at school regardless of who gives you the information, you need to follow your daddy’s advice…! Shannon asked a lot of incredible questions that caused me to be speechless at the time, but as parents we need to provide answer/s or else they will find somewhere else. Many child molestation takes place because kids try to find answers from strangers / adults that are familiar to them / family members, etc…
